Our school serves many options for lunch every day, including hot lunch, grilled chicken sandwich, or peanut butter and jelly Uncrustables. We also offer a variety of snacks each day for students in grades 5-8. Students have a choice of what they buy. Students are not permitted to purchase snacks unless they have either packed a lunch or purchased lunch in our lunchroom. Children that owe for a lunch charge are not permitted to buy snacks until all charges are paid.

EAT BREAKFAST AT SCHOOL
Mornings can really be crazy....the alarm doesn't go off...the kids don't want to get up....there's no time to eat breakfast before the bus comes...or they're just not ready to eat. If this sounds like your house, we have good news for you. Breakfast is served at school! School breakfast will give your child a healthy start to the day. A nutritious breakfast helps students be more alert so they can learn more in class. Breakfast has vitamins and nutrients for a strong and healthy body. Breakfast at school is affordable, too. If you qualify for free and reduced price meals, you also qualify for the breakfast program, with no additional paperwork. You can't find a healthy breakfast at such a low cost anywhere else. Help your child start the day right with school breakfast!

STELLAR AWARD

Ascension Elementary School was among 34 schools or school districts out of 3,346 schools in the state recognized by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) with the 2011 Stellar Award for Best Nutrition Practices.

ODE established the Stellar Award Awards in 2003 to recognize schools that use best practices to promote a healthy school nutrition environment. Based on written award nominations, ODE recognized Ascension School as a Stellar Award recipient based on our efforts and achievement in the following areas:

The type of meal service provided for students, such as school breakfast or lunch; The nutritional quality of meals served, including purchasing and preparation practices that reflect the National Dietary Guidelines; The extent to which ala carte and vending items contain healthy choices; Food service staff’s access to continuing education and training opportunities; Success in providing a pleasant eating environment for students; and nutritional education aimed at students, staff, parents and the community through marketing programs and activities; for example using alternatives to candy when rewarding children for good behavior or academic performance.
